H.R. No. 1475


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The Sam Houston Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America recently celebrated the opening of the organization's new headquarters, the Cockrell Scout Center in Houston; and WHEREAS, Replacing the facility that had served as the council's headquarters since 1965, Cockrell Scout Center, a 53,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility, is located at 2225 North Loop West and houses the Scout Shop, nine conference and leadership training rooms, and the Heritage Room, which details the history of the council and displays various scouting memorabilia and artifacts; and WHEREAS, In addition, the grounds of the center feature a mock campfire area, a waterfall, the Eagle Scout wall, which lists the names of over 19,000 young men who have earned the Eagle Scout badge through the council, and a courtyard with statues of three scouts saluting the flags of Texas, the United States, and Boy Scouts of America; and WHEREAS, The Sam Houston Area Council was chartered in 1916 and it annually enables more than 164,000 scouts living within a 17-county region of the state to participate in the myriad character-building activities that have long been at the core of the scouting movement; and WHEREAS, Generations of Texans have taken part in the scouting movement though the council, and it is truly a pleasure to recognize this outstanding organization as it continues in its tradition of empowering the young people of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate all those associated with the Sam Houston Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America on the opening of the Cockrell Scout Center and extend to them sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the council as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
