R E S O L U T I O N
	WHEREAS, The death of Linda Halliday Mafrige on May 20, 2003, 
at the age of 63, has brought a great loss to the many friends and 
relatives of this beloved woman; and
	WHEREAS, Mrs. Mafrige was born in Washington Court House, 
Ohio, to proud parents Carroll and Louise Halliday; after 
graduating from Washington High School, where she was a majorette 
and played in the school band, she attended Stephens College and 
later graduated from Ohio State University with a degree in home 
economics; and
	WHEREAS, Known and admired for her outstanding culinary 
skills, Mrs. Mafrige was also a charming hostess who helped to make 
every get-together, from tailgate parties to black tie affairs, a 
memorable event; while working at Houston Natural Gas, she authored 
the first cookbook for gas grills, and during her lifetime she was 
honored with the prestigious Betty Lamp Award as Home Economist of 
the Year in Harris County; and
	WHEREAS, Together with her husband, Ron, Mrs. Mafrige made 
significant and lasting contributions to generations of young 
Texans by helping to establish numerous endowments and scholarships 
for students of Texas universities; her commitment to Sam Houston 
State University is evidenced by the Ron and Linda Mafrige 
Auditorium, which was named in honor of this generous couple; and
	WHEREAS, Actively committed to improving the quality of life 
of those throughout her community, Mrs. Mafrige enjoyed supporting 
the 100 Club, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Chapelwood United 
Methodist Church, and the Wednesday Charity Club, among other 
organizations; and
	WHEREAS, A woman of many diverse interests, Mrs. Mafrige took 
pleasure in reading, gardening, snow skiing, tennis, and golf, and 
she achieved the golfer's dream of making a hole-in-one; and
	WHEREAS, Mrs. Mafrige was a cherished wife and mother who 
devoted herself to her family, friends, and community; with her 
gracious spirit, quick wit, sparkling blue eyes, and knowing wink, 
this gracious woman touched the lives of many people, and though her 
presence will be deeply missed, her memory will continue to warm and 
light the hearts of all who were privileged to know her; now, 
therefore, be it
	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas 
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Linda Halliday 
Mafrige and extend sincere sympathy to her family: to her husband, 
Ron Mafrige; to her son, Rocky Mafrige and his wife, Joe'l; to her 
brother, John Halliday; and to her many other relatives and 
friends; and, be it further
	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 
prepared for the members of her family and that when the Texas House 
of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Linda 
Halliday Mafrige.
