R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Humboldt Mandell is one of the most senior and respected employees of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and his singular contributions to the field of space exploration are worthy of special commendation; and WHEREAS, Interested in flight from an early age, Mr. Mandell earned his pilot's license at 16 and later joined the Air Force ROTC; he pursued his higher education at The University of Texas at Austin (UT), graduating in 1957, and in the summers expanded his knowledge and experience by working at aerospace companies; and WHEREAS, He joined the staff at NASA in 1962 as a design engineer and ultimately attained the title of program manager; much of his time at the space agency has been devoted to spearheading manned flight to the planet Mars, and in spite of the vast mechanical, physiological, psychological, and political obstacles to accomplishing such a monumental feat, Mr. Mandell and his team have remained focused on attaining that goal; and WHEREAS, A mainstay at the Johnson Space Center in Clear Lake, Mr. Mandell spends one day each week coordinating NASA activities with the Texas Space Grant Consortium, and also finds time in his busy schedule to follow UT sports teams; his continuing support of UT also includes serving as president of the Texas Exes in 1990-1991 and cochairing the committee that created the Texas Scholars Program; and WHEREAS, Throughout the course of his more than four decades with NASA, Mr. Mandell has applied his skills, knowledge, and prestige to realizing the goal of manned space flight to Mars, and it is truly appropriate that he be honored for his remarkable efforts in this regard; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby commend Humboldt Mandell for his significant and visionary contributions to our nation's space program and extend to him sincere best wishes for future success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Mandell as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
