R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Maricela L. Hinojosa of Humble has been selected as the 2003 Special Education Teacher of the Year for the East District of the Houston Independent School District (I.S.D.); and WHEREAS, Since 2001 Ms. Hinojosa has held the post of special education teacher/school chairperson at Eastwood Academy Charter High School; located near downtown Houston, Eastwood holds an exemplary rating from the Texas Education Agency; and WHEREAS, This exceptional educator brings to her responsibilities a wealth of educational and professional experience; she holds three degrees from the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León in Monterrey: a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering, a bachelor's degree in psychology, and a master's degree in psychology/administration; in 2002 she earned an M.Ed. in special education from the University of St. Thomas; and WHEREAS, Before joining the Houston I.S.D. in 2000, Ms. Hinojosa spent 16 years working for the nonprofit social service agencies Avance, Inc., in San Antonio and Houston, and Neighborhood Centers Inc., in the Bayou City; her myriad duties included the design and implementation of programs ranging from literacy, jobs, and parenting to juvenile delinquency prevention and child abuse intervention and treatment; and WHEREAS, Ms. Hinojosa has made presentations and conducted training on an equally wide array of subjects at local, state, and national gatherings; she has been a board member of Parents Anonymous and a valued member of such other groups as the Hispanic Boy Scout Committee, Hispanic Women in Leadership, Child Abuse Prevention Network, and East End Revitalization Committee; moreover, she played an instrumental role in the creation of the Houston Literacy Consortium; and WHEREAS, Through her unwavering commitment to her students' well-being, her deep understanding of the challenges they confront, and her inexhaustible resourcefulness and creativity, Ms. Hinojosa is making an immeasurable contribution to the youth in her program and to their prospects for a rewarding and fulfilling future; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Maricela L. Hinojosa on her selection as the 2003 Special Education Teacher of the Year for the East District of the Houston I.S.D. and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success in her many endeavors; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Ms. Hinojosa as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
