H.R. No. 1619
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Sally Wallace has earned the 2003 Steel Oleander
Award for her considerable contributions to the preservation of
Galveston's history; and
WHEREAS, Adopting the island as her home in 1962, Mrs.
Wallace joined the Galveston Historical Foundation soon after her
arrival; she helped raise funding for a Historic American Building
survey of more than 500 Galveston homes and buildings that became
the basis of Galveston's first historic districts; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Wallace became one of the foremost forces in
maintaining and restoring Galveston's treasured past; due in large
part to her dedicated efforts, the Hendly Building has been
restored, the historic St. Joseph's Church has been kept intact,
and innumerable local structures have been saved from destruction;
and
WHEREAS, This notable woman has helped ensure that future
generations will have a tangible connection with the history of
this great state, and she is truly deserving of special
recognition; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate Sally Wallace on receiving the 2003
Steel Oleander Award and commend her for her many contributions to
the Galveston community; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mrs. Wallace as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
