                                                                  H.R. No. 1696



R E S O L U T I O N
	WHEREAS, The Laredo community mourns the loss of the esteemed 
athletic director and coach at St. Augustine High School, Enrique 
A. "Kike" Mejia, Jr., whose untimely passing on May 24, 2003, at the 
age of 63, has profoundly saddened the family and friends of a man 
described as a legend; and
	WHEREAS, A Laredo native, Coach Mejia attended Martin High 
School, where he competed in basketball, baseball, and track and 
field; notably, he played on the 1956 state championship basketball 
team, whose members were called the Tiger Legends and  were inducted 
into the Laredo Latin American International Sports Hall of Fame in 
1975; after high school, Coach Mejia ran track and field at 
Southwest Texas State University and went on to become a stellar 
second baseman and shortstop in the semiprofessional baseball 
league as well as a skillful player-manager for the B-29 team; and
	WHEREAS, Coach Mejia returned to his hometown, where he would 
play an influential role in the lives of several generations of 
youth beginning in the early 1960s when he took a head coach 
position with Holding Institute; in 1980, he went to the St. 
Augustine athletic program, where he served as athletic director 
and head coach of basketball and baseball, amassing more than 500 
victories on the basketball court; and
	WHEREAS, Coach Mejia was a beloved leader who always put the 
interests of his students first; he is remembered with tearful eyes 
and fond memories by his family and friends and the students he 
coached throughout the years, and his spirit lives on in the hearts 
of those who were fortunate enough to have known him; now, 
therefore, be it
	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas 
Legislature hereby pay special tribute to the life of Coach Enrique 
Mejia and extend deepest sympathies to the members of his family and 
to his many friends; and, be it further
	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of 
Representatives adjourns on this day, it do so in memory of Enrique 
A. "Kike" Mejia, Jr.
