R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The passing of Richard "Dick" O. Harris on May 10, 2003, at the age of 75, has brought a great loss to the family and friends of this esteemed Wichita Falls resident; and WHEREAS, A graduate of The University of Texas at Austin, this remarkable athlete was an All-American football player for the Longhorns in 1948-1949, and was inducted into The University of Texas Football Hall of Fame in 1996; and WHEREAS, Mr. Harris began a highly successful career in the banking industry in 1960 with First Wichita National Bank; he relocated to Amarillo, where he demonstrated outstanding leadership as president of American National Bank, a position he also held with American National Bank of Austin before returning to Amarillo as president of Texas Commerce Bank; and WHEREAS, Retiring with his wife to Wichita Falls in 1993, Mr. Harris was a faithful congregant of Grace Church; he sat on numerous boards of directors, including Scott and White Hospital in Temple, which he ably served for 25 years; and WHEREAS, Those who were fortunate to share the friendship of Mr. Harris will long miss his warmth, gracious hospitality, and genuine love for others, but his remarkable spirit lives on in the hearts of those whose lives he touched during his time on this earth; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby pay special tribute to the life of Richard "Dick" O. Harris and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his son, Richard O. Harris, Jr.; to his sister, Jean Harris Smith; to his brother, Jack Harris; to his grandchildren, Laura Brooke Harris, Richard O. Harris III, and Braden Leigh Harris; and to the other relatives and many friends of this beloved man; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Richard O. Harris.
