R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, With the passing on October 27, 2002, of Dr. James
Watson Simpson, the State of Texas and the nation lost a
distinguished leader in the field of pediatric cardiology whose
vision and expertise saved the lives of countless children; and
WHEREAS, A Corpus Christi native, Dr. Simpson served as
director of pediatric cardiology at Driscoll Children's Hospital in
Corpus Christi, and in 1970 he fulfilled a long-held dream when he
established the Children's Heart Program of South Texas; its mobile
team travels to outlying areas around the state to treat indigent
children with heart disease and heart defects, and no child who
needed the program's services has ever been turned away in the three
decades that have passed since its founding; today known as The
Children's Heart and Health Institute of Texas, the program has
grown from seven initial medical clinics to locations in 35 South
Texas counties; and
WHEREAS, Recognized with many well-deserved honors for his
immense contributions to medicine, this remarkable physician was
the namesake for the James Simpson Cardiac Catheterization
Laboratory at Driscoll Children's Hospital; and
WHEREAS, Dr. James Simpson served as an inspiration to all
who were privileged to know him, and his work lives on in the life of
every child he treated and saved; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of the late James
Watson Simpson, M.D., a true Texas hero and humanitarian; and, be it
further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas House
of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Dr.
James Simpson.
