R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is pleased to pay
tribute to Dr. Peggy B. Smith for her exceptional professional
accomplishments; and
WHEREAS, Director of the Baylor Teen Clinic in Houston, Dr.
Smith oversees reproductive health services for indigent teens and
has published more than 95 articles and three books on related
topics; she chairs the Greater Houston Collaborative for Children
and the statewide Family Planning Advisory Committee for the
commissioner of the Texas Department of Health; and
WHEREAS, She was appointed by Governors White, Clements,
Richards, and Bush to chair the Children's Trust Fund of Texas,
served on Governor Richards's State-wide Health Task Force, and was
appointed by the speaker of the Texas House of Representatives to
serve on the Select Committee on Adolescent Pregnancy; on a wider
scale, she has also served as a member of the National Advisory
Council of the Hogg Foundation; and
WHEREAS, An alumna of The University of Texas, this esteemed
Texan earned bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees by the age
of 23 and was voted Sweetheart of The University of Texas and Queen
of the Cotton Bowl; Dr. Smith has received a Kezia DePelchin Award
and a 1996 Good Samaritan Award for her work in behalf of health
care and child abuse prevention, and she has also been an American
Leadership Forum fellow; and
WHEREAS, Throughout her life, Dr. Smith has set high
standards and an inspiring example of service in behalf of the most
vulnerable members of our society; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby commend Dr. Peggy B. Smith for her deep
commitment to her fellow Texans and extend to her sincere best
wishes for continued success and fulfillment; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Dr. Smith as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
