R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, George Garrett of Galena Park was a man of rare
dedication and drive, and his passing on May 23, 2003, at the age of
90, brought great sadness to all who were privileged to know him;
and
WHEREAS, Mr. Garrett helped to found the Galena Park
Volunteer Fire Department in 1936 and set a milestone in the
department's history by becoming its longest serving firefighter;
though he fought his last fire seven years ago, he continued to
offer his expertise, insight, and energy to the city and was an
active member of the Galena Park Masonic Lodge; and
WHEREAS, Most recently serving as the firefighter's
chaplain, this estimable gentleman was a father figure and mentor
to many; in a show of admiration, Galena Park named its red fire
truck in his honor; and
WHEREAS, With a deeply ingrained passion for protecting the
public's welfare, George Garrett dedicated much of his life to
serving others; he is truly missed, but his vitality and love for
his chosen vocation live on in the hearts of those who knew this
remarkable man; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby honor the life of George Garrett and extend
sincere sympathy to his family: to his daughters, Erble Jay
Creasman, Dody Jones, and Cathie Eargle; to his sons, Dallas and
Stan Garrett; to his siblings; to his 11 grandchildren and 14
great-grandchildren; and to the innumerable firefighters whose
lives he touched over the years; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
Representatives adjourns on this day, it do so in memory of George
Garrett.
