R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Citizens of Kleberg County, on the Texas coastal plain, can look with pride on their area's long and colorful history; and WHEREAS, At the time Spaniards first arrived in the region, it was inhabited by Coahuiltecan and Karankawa Indians; the first Europeans to sail along the county's coast were Alonso Alvarez de Pineda and the members of his expedition, who mapped the coastline from Florida to Mexico in 1519; in 1689, the Spanish explorer General Alonzo de Leon came upon what is now Baffin Bay in present-day Kleberg County while searching for the French explorer, La Salle; and WHEREAS, Spanish land grants in Kleberg County were assigned to ranchers as early as the 1750s; the county now boasts the famous King Ranch, which was established by Captain Richard King in 1853; and WHEREAS, Kleberg County was created by an act of the 33rd Texas Legislature on February 27, 1913, out of a portion of Nueces County; it was named for Robert Kleberg, whose son, Robert J. Kleberg, was one of the five commissioners charged with organizing the county; and WHEREAS, Contributing to the economy of the area are Texas A&M University--Kingsville and the Naval Air Station Kingsville, the training base for some of the navy's best jet fighter pilots; and WHEREAS, Kleberg County citizens are fortunate to have many able elected officials and public employees, who through the years have rendered exceptional service with little fanfare; and WHEREAS, The hardworking citizens of Kleberg County are proud of their heritage and are looking forward to meeting the challenges of the 21st century; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby honor Kleberg County and its elected officials, public employees, and citizens for their outstanding contributions to Texas and the United States of America.
