H.R. No. 1918


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives takes great pleasure in recognizing Cameron County for its valuable contributions to the Lone Star State; and WHEREAS, The County of Cameron was established on February 12, 1848, by an act of the Texas Legislature; a small settlement known as Santa Rita, near the future site of Brownsville, was selected as its first county seat; and WHEREAS, One of the area's most recognized political figures was Oscar C. Dancy, who devoted nearly 50 years to the improvement of the county by advocating such vital projects as road construction; and WHEREAS, In the path of devastating hurricanes, including Hurricane Alice in 1954 and Hurricane Beulah in 1967, the community recognizes the importance of flood control mechanisms and also enjoys the recreational opportunities offered by the contruction of Falcon Dam and Amistad Dam; and WHEREAS, The construction of two bridges, the South Padre Island Causeway, which connects the county to South Padre Island, and the Gateway Bridge, which connects the county to our international neighbor, Mexico, has contributed significantly to Cameron County tourism; and WHEREAS, The continued growth and success of the communities throughout the county are possible, in large part, because of the dedicated efforts not only of the area's residents, but also of the elected county officials and the county employees, and these hardworking, public-spirited citizens are truly deserving of special recognition; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby honor the county officials, county employees, and residents of Cameron County and extend to them sincere best wishes for much happiness and success in the future.
