R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives takes great
pleasure in honoring Kenedy County and its many contributions to
the Lone Star State; and
WHEREAS, The site of Paleo-Indian occupation between 9200 and
6000 B.C., Kenedy County was later home to the Coahuiltecan Indians
before the arrival of the Spaniards in the 1500s; and
WHEREAS, More than 15 Spanish and Mexican land grants, dating
as far back as 1792, were assigned within the borders of the present
county; they included the Agostadero de San Juan de Carricitos land
grant, which was claimed by Jose Nicolas Cabazos; and
WHEREAS, Established in 1921, the county covers 1,389 square
miles and boasts several of the world's most illustrious ranches,
including the King Ranch, Kenedy Ranch, Armstrong Ranch, and
Yturria Ranch; and
WHEREAS, The county seat of Sarita was established in 1904 by
John G. Kenedy, son of the founder of the King Ranch; it formerly
served as the county seat of Willacy County before the creation of
Kenedy County; and
WHEREAS, A tribute to the ideals of its founders, Kenedy
County remains rich in natural treasures, with wide-open pastures
that still beckon ranchers of today; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby honor the elected officials, public employees,
community leaders, and citizens of Kenedy County for their
outstanding contributions to Texas and the United States of
America.
