H.R. No. 1922
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Brooks County was created in the 19th century out of
portions of Webb and Starr counties, which before 1848 were part of
San Patricio and Nueces counties; and
WHEREAS, Land grants in the Trans-Nueces region were made as
early as 1767, but it was not until the 1800s that colonists were
introduced to the area now known as Brooks County; and
WHEREAS, In the early 1890s, Edward C. Lasater established a
headquarters and accumulated an abundance of land in Brooks County,
and today that property is the site of the city of Falfurrias; and
WHEREAS, Local residents take pride in this area, for it is
the site of the Texas Tropical Trail, which runs through the county
and is a beautiful tourist attraction; and
WHEREAS, The economy of Brooks County relies heavily on
farming and ranching and is a major contributor to the Lone Star
State's produce market; in 1906 E. R. Rachal planted the first
citrus tree in the area, and from this single tree grew a strong and
successful citrus industry; and
WHEREAS, In 1912 Brooks County opened the doors to its first
school, and its fine educational system has created a firm
foundation for the area's economy by producing an informed
citizenry that is well-served by the county's elementary, middle,
and high schools and a talented team of educators; and
WHEREAS, Brooks County is home to many dedicated elected
officials, public employees, and community leaders, who over the
years have carried out a public service too seldom acknowledged;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby honor the elected officials, public employees,
civic leaders, and citizens of Brooks County for their outstanding
contributions to Texas and the United States of America.
