H.R. No. 1923


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The city of Hebbronville was established in 1883 when the Texas-Mexican Railway came to the area; and WHEREAS, In 1887, the Colegio Altamirano was created in the community; Rosendo Barrera was the first instructor, and the school was funded by prominent Mexican American families who wanted their children to learn Spanish and Mexican culture and traditions; and WHEREAS, In 1895, the first post office was established, creating a more convenient means of communication for residents; and WHEREAS, The city of Hebbronville became part of the newly established Jim Hogg County in 1913 by the unanimous vote of 176 citizens; in 1915, Hebbronville had an estimated population of 400 residents, as well as a bank, eight grocery stores, a drugstore, and 13 cattle breeders; and WHEREAS, In the 1920s, a school district, newspaper, and a Franciscan seminary were established in the city of Hebbronville, which by then had an estimated population of 1,800; and WHEREAS, The Hebbronville Chamber of Commerce was organized in 1958, and the Colegio Altamirano closed; two years later the Hebbronville Auction and Commission Company was organized to handle the large number of cattle raised and sold in the area; and WHEREAS, At the beginning of the 21st century, the city of Hebbronville remains a small, predominantly Mexican American community, with an estimated population of 4,608 and 54 businesses; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby honor the city of Hebbronville for its contributions to the great State of Texas and extend to its residents sincere best wishes for success in all their endeavors.
