H.R. No. 1925


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The city of Raymondville was established by Edward Burleson Raymond, who organized the Raymond Town and Improvement Company in 1904; and WHEREAS, During that same year the post office was established, and Raymond's company, along with the Kleberg Town and Improvement Company, gave right-of-way to the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway; and WHEREAS, Raymondville, located in what was then Cameron County, had by 1914 a population of 350, as well as four general stores, a bank, a newspaper, a cotton gin, and a lumber company; and WHEREAS, With a 300-day growing season made possible by favorable summers and winters, Raymondville soon established itself as a commercial center for grain, sorghum, cotton, citrus, vegetable, and corn production; and WHEREAS, In the 1960s the city diversified its economy by attracting a variety of industries, ranging from cottonseed and fruit processing to the manufacture of farm implements, leather goods, and children's clothing; by 2000 there were nearly 300 rated businesses in Raymondville, and the municipal population had grown to almost 10,000; and WHEREAS, The city of Raymondville boasts many fine recreational areas, including public swimming pools, a golf course, and a city park; moreover, saltwater fishing can be found at Laguna Madre and Port Mansfield; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby honor the city of Raymondville for its long and unique history and pay special tribute to the many contributions its citizens have made to the State of Texas and the United States of America.
