R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Port Isabel, Texas, is a city steeped in history;
named for Queen Isabella of Spain and rumored to have been one of
the haunts of the pirate Jean Lafitte, Port Isabel was also a supply
base for General Zachary Taylor's army during the Mexican War, as
well as an embarkation point for eastern gold-seekers on their way
to California; and
WHEREAS, Port Isabel is located on the Laguna Madre in
southeastern Cameron County, and its prosperity has always been
linked to its seaside location; a major shrimping center, the area
is ideal for commercial and sport fishing, and the city's port
processes hundreds of tons of cargo each year; and
WHEREAS, Among the town's many points of interest are the
historic Port Isabel Lighthouse, the cruise ship Le Mistral, the
restored shrimp boat Lady Bea, and the nearby Laguna Atascosa
National Wildlife Refuge; recreational activities include fishing,
boating, and hunting; and
WHEREAS, Blessed with a rich history and dynamic citizenry,
Port Isabel is a city whose populace can take considerable pride in
its past while looking forward to the future, and this unique
community is deserving of special legislative recognition at this
time; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby honor the accomplishments of the citizens, past
and present, of Port Isabel and extend to the city's current
residents sincere best wishes for future prosperity.
