R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The Keep Texas Beautiful organization recently honored the City of Athens with a 2002-2003 Governor's Community Achievement Award, paying tribute to this lovely East Texas community's record of success in its grassroots environmental efforts; this honor is all the more special because it marks the third year in a row that the city has been recognized, making it one of only 17 municipalities in the Lone Star State to receive the coveted Sustained Excellence Award; and WHEREAS, The award is a fitting tribute to a community that, in addition to building strong volunteer programs and forging new community partnerships, has demonstrated extraordinary commitment to programs that include litter prevention, public education, solid waste management, recycling, illegal dumping enforcement, and city beautification; and WHEREAS, In addition to receiving the prestigious Keep Texas Beautiful award, the City of Athens will receive a landscaping grant from the Texas Department of Transportation, and these funds will be used to preserve, protect, and enhance the community for future generations of Athenians, as well as for those citizens of the Lone Star State fortunate enough to visit this truly charming town; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate the City of Athens on receiving a 2002-2003 Governor's Community Achievement Award from the Keep Texas Beautiful organization and extend to its citizens best wishes for success in their continuing efforts to keep Athens beautiful; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the City of Athens as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
