R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Velma Sue DeLeon has been named the Funeral Director of the Year for 2002-2003 by the South Texas Funeral Directors Association (STFDA), a fitting tribute to the outstanding contributions she has made to the funeral service profession and to the community of San Juan; and WHEREAS, A graduate of The University of Texas at Austin, Ms. DeLeon worked as an accountant until 1991, when she enrolled at Houston's Commonwealth Institute of Funeral Service and completed an apprenticeship with Virgil Wilson Mortuaries; she became a licensed funeral director in 1992, remaining at Virgil Wilson to gain the expertise she would later apply, along with her previous experience in business and accounting, to launch a successful company of her own; and WHEREAS, This new enterprise, Memorial Funeral Home of San Juan, was built in partnership with her husband, and today it provides exemplary service to more than 250 families a year in South Texas; over the course of her distinguished career, Ms. DeLeon has served as president of the STFDA and has also held various leadership positions in professional associations at the local, statewide, and national levels; and WHEREAS, In addition to her contributions to the funeral service industry, she is a greatly admired civic leader; Ms. DeLeon is the treasurer of the McAllen Sunset Lions Club and the secretary-treasurer of the San Juan Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and she has made many significant contributions to such diverse organizations as the Pharr Folklife Festival Committee, the Tri-City Business/Education Coalition, and the San Juan Hospice Advisory Board; she brings both commitment and compassion to every facet of her life, and her efforts in behalf of others are to be heartily and sincerely commended; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Velma Sue DeLeon, the STFDA Funeral Director of the Year for 2002-2003, and extend to her best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Ms. DeLeon as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
