R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The passing of Paul Howell on August 31, 2001, brought a great loss to the family and many friends of this distinguished Texas businessman; and WHEREAS, Mr. Howell served his country with distinction as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Navy; a true hero, he survived the attack on Pearl Harbor and the sinking of his ship in the Battle of the Coral Sea; and WHEREAS, A Louisiana State University graduate, this accomplished gentleman was also a published writer, authoring four books, including Our Democracy's Game in 1984; and WHEREAS, In 1955, Mr. Howell acquired a small oil refinery, which became the basis for Howell Corporation, an energy company publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange, and he served as its chief executive officer for many years; he also was an active volunteer and could take special pride in the time he spent teaching life skills to prisoners; and WHEREAS, The blessings of Paul Howell's life will be forever cherished by his family and all who benefited from the notable contributions he made to the community, and his memory will long endure; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Paul N. Howell and extend sincere sympathy to his family and many friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Paul Howell.
