A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT
relating to providing health care services without regard to a person's immigration status. BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: SECTION 1. Chapter 64, Health and Safety Code, is amended by adding Section 64.002 to read as follows: Sec. 64.002. HEALTH CARE SERVICES FOR CERTAIN IMMIGRANTS. A municipality, a county, or a public hospital may use money from state or local sources to provide health care services and assistance to a person without regard to the person's immigration status. SECTION 2. Chapter 285, Health and Safety Code, is amended by adding Subchapter M to read as follows:
SUBCHAPTER M. PROVISION OF SERVICES TO CERTAIN IMMIGRANTS
Sec. 285.201. AUTHORITY TO PROVIDE SERVICES TO CERTAIN IMMIGRANTS. A hospital district created under general or special law may use money from state or local sources to provide medical and hospital care to a person without regard to the person's immigration status. SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this Act takes effect September 1, 2003.
