A BILL TO BE ENTITLED

AN ACT

relating to liability insurance required of a motor carrier 
transporting household goods in this state.
	BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:                        
	SECTION 1.  Section 643.101(a), Transportation Code, is 
amended to read as follows:
	(a)  A motor carrier required to register under Subchapter B 
or Section 643.153(c) shall maintain liability insurance in an 
amount set by the department for each vehicle requiring 
registration the carrier operates.
	SECTION 2.  Section 643.153, Transportation Code, is amended 
by adding Subsection (c-1) to read as follows:
	(c-1)  The department shall:                                            
		(1)  require motor carriers that are not required to 
register under Subchapter B to file with the department evidence of 
commercial liability insurance before transporting household goods 
for compensation; and
		(2)  determine the forms and procedures for filing the 
evidence required by this subsection.
	SECTION 3.  This Act takes effect September 1, 2003.
