SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of Texas is pleased to join citizens across the state in celebrating the Centennial of Flight in the United States; and WHEREAS, As part of the Centennial of Flight Celebration, aviation and space history exhibits will be on display at the Texas State Capitol; and WHEREAS, Wilbur and Orville Wright built the first powered, manned aircraft near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, and flew it on the morning of December 17, 1903; as the result of their tenacity, creativity, and courage, a new industry was born, and a new way of life followed; and WHEREAS, The airplane dramatically changed not only transportation but also commerce, communication, and warfare throughout the world; in Texas, with its area of 267,000 square miles and its borders that are 800 miles apart, aviation is an important part of life and industry; and WHEREAS, The evolution of rocketry and the deployment of long-range ballistic missiles in the 1950s ushered in the development of space shuttles, lunar landings, and the international space station; and WHEREAS, As the race for space exploration escalated in the 1960s, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration expanded to include the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston, which employs over 16,000 aerospace workers; and WHEREAS, The space and aviation industry is a unique, specialized, and highly technical industry that is of vital importance to the state's economy, image, and future advancement, and it is appropriate to commemorate the legacy of the Wright brothers and to encourage a new generation of inventors, innovators, and dreamers; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 78th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby recognize the Texas Centennial of Flight Celebration, which is being held from January 13 through January 26, 2003, and the many contributions the aviation and aerospace industry has made to this great state; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared in honor of the Centennial of Flight Celebration.
