CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Herb Miller for winning five medals at the state competition of the Senior Olympics held in Lubbock from August 26 to September 1, 2002; and WHEREAS, Herb Miller also participated in the regional senior games from March 10 to March 16, 2002, in Temple, Texas, setting a golf scoring record of 68 and 79 for a total of 138, and he had the first double eagle in Senior Olympics Games history; and WHEREAS, The Senior Olympics Texas State Games are sanctioned by the National Senior Games Association for athletes who are at least 50 years old; participants compete in 18 different sporting events, including golf, discus, basketball, and track and field; and WHEREAS, Herb Miller won a gold medal in basketball, a silver medal in golf, a silver medal in the discus, a bronze medal in the high jump, and a bronze medal in the shot put, and he qualified for the national competition scheduled in Hampton Roads, Virginia, from May 26 to June 9, 2003; and WHEREAS, Herb enjoyed athletic competition in discus and shot put and in swimming and football in high school and college; he is a graduate of Louisiana Tech University, where he was All-State in basketball, football, and track; and WHEREAS, This exemplary athlete has participated in the Senior Olympics for the past six years, sometimes competing against former high school and college rivals; he takes pleasure in watching athletes in their 80s and 90s take part in the games; and WHEREAS, Herb Miller has demonstrated exceptional athletic ability and has confirmed the value and pleasure of lifelong athletic participation; he has brought great honor to himself, to his community, and to the State of Texas; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 78th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby commend Herb Miller on his outstanding achievements and extend to him best wishes for success in the national Senior Olympics; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared for him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Legislature.
