S.C.R. No. 39 




SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of Texas joins the citizens of Houston in mourning the loss of J. Hugh Liedtke, who died March 28, 2003, at the age of 81; and WHEREAS, Hugh Liedtke earned a bachelor's degree from Amherst College, a master's degree in business administration from Harvard University, and a degree from The University of Texas School of Law; he married Betty Lyn Dirickson, who preceded him in death in 1992; and WHEREAS, Mr. Liedtke joined his brother, William Liedtke, and former President George Bush to found Zapata Petroleum Corporation in Midland in 1953 and Stetco Petroleum Company in 1962; these companies later became Pennzoil Corporation; he served as the chief executive officer of Pennzoil and its predecessor companies until 1988 and as chairman of Pennzoil until 1994; and WHEREAS, A giant in the Texas oil industry for more than four decades, Hugh lived by the wildcatter's motto, "My word is my bond," and he was widely respected for his integrity, brilliance, and vision as a businessman; and WHEREAS, For his many contributions to the oil industry, he was inducted into the Petroleum Museum Hall of Fame; and WHEREAS, Hugh Liedtke lived his life to the fullest and was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 78th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family of J. Hugh Liedtke: his children, Karen Mark, Kristy Liedtke, Hugh Liedtke, Jr., Blake Liedtke, and Katy Bade; and his 15 grandchildren; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared for the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Legislature, and that when the legislature adjourns this day, it do so in memory of J. Hugh Liedtke.
