SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 25
WHEREAS, The Texas Senate is proud to welcome students,
faculty, and staff of San Antonio's St. Mary's University to
Austin on January 22, 2003, to celebrate St. Mary's University
Day at the State Capitol; and
WHEREAS, Founded in 1852, St. Mary's University has
provided its students with outstanding higher education for over
150 years, making it the oldest university in San Antonio; the
school also holds the notable distinction of being the oldest
and largest Catholic university in all of the southwestern
United States; and
WHEREAS, St. Mary's University embraces the tradition of
Marianist schooling, emphasizing community and values; the
notion of universal service is stressed in Marianist teaching,
and a caring learning environment has aided in the long-standing
success of the university; and
WHEREAS, An academic institution of high repute, St. Mary's
University has been ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of
the best schools in the western United States for seven
consecutive years, selected by Hispanic Magazine as one of the
top 25 universities for Hispanics in 2001, and rated by Hispanic
Business as seventh business school in the nation in 2000; and
WHEREAS, Maintaining high standards for both students and
professors, the university's esteemed faculty includes 10
Fulbright Scholars and 11 recipients of the Minnie Stevens Piper
Foundation award for dedication to the teaching profession and
outstanding academic, scientific, and scholarly achievement; and
WHEREAS, Higher education plays a vital role in the
progress of our youth, our state, and our nation; St. Mary's
University has been a valuable asset to Texas for a century and a
half, as it helps to develop students who are both knowledgeable
and committed to helping those in need; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby recognize January 22, 2003, as
St. Mary's University Day at the State Capitol in honor of this
venerable institution and its notable contributions to the
State of Texas.
