SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 29
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Jerry Dale Purdon on the occasion of a reception marking his retirement as Texas City chief of police; and WHEREAS, Jerry was born in Mount Vernon on June 5, 1939; he earned a bachelor's degree from Baylor University, and he graduated from the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy in Quantico, Virginia; and WHEREAS, Jerry Purdon joined the Texas City Police Department on January 2, 1964, and served as a patrolman and in the identification, investigation, communications, and administration divisions; he was promoted to sergeant in 1968 and to captain in 1979; with each promotion, he undertook increased responsibility with the patrol and communications divisions, the Police Academy, and the office of the chief of police; and WHEREAS, Jerry was appointed Texas City chief of police in 1985, and over the years, he has managed the many responsibilities of his position with skill and dedication; he is now retiring from a department that employs 80 commissioned and 30 noncommissioned officers and has an annual budget of more than $6 million; and WHEREAS, Trained in all phases of law enforcement, Jerry has brought great credit to himself by sharing his expertise with his colleagues; he has served as a member of the advisory board on Law Enforcement and Training at the College of the Mainland and on the Criminal Justice Advisory Committee of the Houston-Galveston Area Council of Governments; and WHEREAS, Throughout his long career, Jerry has consistently displayed superior judgment in dealing with the unique challenges of law enforcement duty, and his strong leadership has helped to ensure the public safety of the citizens of his community; and WHEREAS, Local dignitaries will join Jerry and his family and many friends at the Doyle Convention Center on January 24, 2003, to celebrate his years of dedicated service and his many contributions to the field of law enforcement; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 78th Legislature, hereby commend Texas City Chief of Police Jerry Dale Purdon on his outstanding service in law enforcement and extend to him best wishes for the retirement years ahead; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
