SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 52
WHEREAS, The contributions of the City of Lufkin are of
singular importance to the State of Texas and on January 23, 2003,
residents of this proud city will come together in celebration of
Lufkin Day at the Capitol; and
WHEREAS, Founded in 1882 as a stop on the Houston East and
West Railway, the city was named for Captain Abraham P. Lufkin,
a cotton merchant and city councilman from Galveston; with a
thriving lumber industry and a prime location on the rail line,
the small town flourished; and
WHEREAS, Lufkin was once referred to as a place "where the
pine trees tickle the angel's toes," a saying that encapsulates
the natural setting of the densely forested town that lies in the
heart of the East Texas Piney Woods; and
WHEREAS, While timber remains a significant source of the
city's income, Lufkin has also established itself as a center of
industry, with national corporations and manufacturers becoming
integral parts of the local economy; and
WHEREAS, A popular draw for outdoor enthusiasts, Lufkin is
on the cusp of the Angelina National Forest and Sam Rayburn Lake,
providing ample opportunity for camping, hunting, and water
sports; residents and visitors alike enjoy visiting the Texas
Forestry Museum and the Museum of East Texas, both popular
attractions in Lufkin; and
WHEREAS, Citizens of Lufkin can take great pride in their
prospering East Texas town; the future is indeed bright for the
City of Lufkin and its residents, and it is a pleasure to welcome
these fine Texans to Austin; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby recognize January 23, 2003, as
Lufkin Day at the Capitol and extend sincere best wishes to
all Angelina County residents on this noteworthy occasion.
