SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 53
In Memory
of
Margaret Rhodes Cowen
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of Margaret Rhodes Cowen, who died January 14, 2003, at the age of 86; and WHEREAS, Margaret Rhodes was born on September 5, 1916, in Charleston, South Carolina, to Daniel and Alice Rhodes; she graduated from Burke High School; in 1933, she married the late Arthur Lewis, and the couple was blessed with three children; she married the late Reverend James E. Cowen on June 11, 1953, and spent many happy years in a loving marriage with him; and WHEREAS, She worked for many years as a seamstress for Bandbox and Condon's Department Store; and WHEREAS, A devout Christian, Margaret was a life member of the Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church, where she served unselfishly and untiringly for many years; she was president of the Pastor's Aide Club and a member of the Stewardess Board, the Missionary Society, and the Inter-generational Gospel Choir; after she moved to Austin in 1995, she joined the Grant African Methodist Episcopal Worship Center; and WHEREAS, Margaret Cowen was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, and she leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by her family and many friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 78th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family of Margaret Rhodes Cowen: her daughter, Arthuree L. Quander, and her husband, Dr. Joseph P. Quander, Jr.; her sister, Martha Hoyle; her sister-in-law, Elnora Rhodes; her brother-in-law, Isaac Washington; her 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; her special and devoted niece, Brenda Grant; and her many other loving family members; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the members of her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Margaret Rhodes Cowen.
