SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 66
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride
in recognizing Jody Conradt, women's basketball coach for
The University of Texas at Austin, on coaching her 800th
career victory in a game against Texas Tech University on
January 22, 2003; and
WHEREAS, An internationally renowned coach who has
been inducted into numerous halls of fame, Jody Conradt
became the second woman to join the elite 800 Club with this
awesome 69-58 victory by the Lady Longhorns of
The University of Texas at Austin; she is only the seventh coach
to win 800 games in American college basketball history; her
overall record stands at 800-262; and
WHEREAS, The extraordinary coaching talent that
Jody Conradt has brought to her 27 seasons as head coach of the
Lady Longhorns has made her a legend among her peers; and
WHEREAS, During Jody's tenure as head coach, Texas has
emerged as a national basketball power, and it has dominated
conference play--the Longhorns won an astonishing 183 straight
Southwest Conference games over a 12-year period; in addition,
her remarkable coaching has sent numerous Texas athletes into the
professional basketball ranks; and
WHEREAS, Jody began her illustrious career in her hometown
of Goldthwaite, where she was an outstanding athlete and a member
of the Goldthwaite High School basketball team; while a student
at Baylor University, she continued to play basketball,
averaging 20 points per game; and
WHEREAS, After graduating from Baylor University in 1963,
Jody taught and coached at Waco Midway High School for several
years; she earned a master's degree from Baylor University in
1969; and
WHEREAS, Jody took her first job as a college basketball
coach at Sam Houston State University in 1969; she also was in
charge of the track and volleyball teams; she joined the staff of
The University of Texas-Arlington in 1973 and coached its women's
basketball, softball, and volleyball teams; and
WHEREAS, After arriving at The University of Texas at Austin
in 1976, Jody quickly improved the Lady Longhorns's ranking by
ensuring that the team played against more talented opponents; her
vision paid off--in her third year as head coach, she led the team
to a 37-4 season, and in her fourth year, she won the National Coach
of the Year award; the Lady Longhorns won the Association of
Intercollegiate Athletics for Women state title in her fifth year;
and
WHEREAS, A tenacious and visionary women's sports leader,
Jody has built a great team partly through her dedication and
talent and partly through her serious recruitment efforts and
her special ability to forge close relationships with
high school coaches and players; in addition to her coaching
responsibilities, she served as the women's athletic director
at The University of Texas at Austin from 1992 to 2001; and
WHEREAS, Over the years, Jody Conradt has received
countless honors; she was inducted into the Texas Women's Sports
Hall of Fame in 1986, and she was chosen the Southwest Conference
Coach of the Year in 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988, and 1996; she was
inducted into the International Women's Sports Hall of Fame in
1995; she has earned four National Coach of the Year awards; and
WHEREAS, Undoubtedly one of America's most esteemed
women's basketball coaches, Jody Conradt pursues excellence
in all of her endeavors; she has distinguished herself in
her profession and is a source of great pride to
The University of Texas at Austin and its community; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby commend Jody Conradt for her
exceptional accomplishments and her outstanding career and
extend congratulations to her for winning her 800th collegiate
basketball game; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
