SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 77
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize George J. Mundine for his lifetime of outstanding
service with the Houston Independent School District; and
WHEREAS, George Mundine earned a bachelor's degree from
Prairie View A&M University in 1950 and a master's degree from
Texas Southern University in 1951; and
WHEREAS, In 1954, George began his career with the Houston
Independent School District by serving as a teacher at Dunbar
Elementary School; he became a public school administrator in
1960, when he was named principal of the Doris Miller Elementary
School; he later served as principal of Langston Elementary
School, and in 1972, he was appointed principal of Blackshear
Elementary School, where he served until his retirement in 2002;
and
WHEREAS, Mr. Mundine was a highly respected administrator
who promoted community involvement in the field of education; he
developed partnerships with such businesses as the Wells Fargo
Bank, the United States Post Office, and the H-E-B Pantry Food
Store; he also invited notable individuals to share their
experiences with public school students, including the honorable
Al Gore, Vice President of the United States, Spike Lee, the
renowned film director, and H. E. Rosine Soglo, the First Lady of
Benin; and
WHEREAS, Under Mr. Mundine's leadership, Blackshear
Elementary School achieved national acclaim--in April of 1995,
Redbook magazine rated it as "One of America's Best Schools"; and
WHEREAS, In celebration of George Mundine's many
accomplishments and his contributions to the Houston Independent
School District, colleagues and friends will honor him at a
special retirement luncheon on February 16, 2003; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby commend George J. Mundine for the
exemplary manner in which he served the educational needs of
countless schoolchildren for 48 years; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
