SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 82
In Memory
of
Dr. Emerson Emory
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
citizens of Dallas in mourning the loss of Dr. Emerson Emory,
who died January 28, 2003, at the age of 77; and
WHEREAS, Emerson Emory was born January 29, 1925, in
South Dallas; he attended Prairie View A&M College before
joining the United States Army at age 18; after serving his
country in World War II, he earned a bachelor's degree from
Lincoln University in Pennsylvania and a medical degree from
Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Emory returned to Dallas in 1953 and joined
Saint Paul Hospital as Dallas' first black intern; he went on to
work for the Veterans Administration Hospital in Dallas before
opening his own office in psychiatry in 1961; five years later,
he was the first black physician to volunteer to serve in
Vietnam; and
WHEREAS, A strong and tenacious individual, Dr. Emory
was adamant about his beliefs in spite of their seeming
contradictions; he was a pioneer in the Dallas civil rights
movement, fighting for justice for minorities, and he was active
with the Sons of Confederate Veterans, the organization that
seeks to preserve and honor the memory of the Confederate cause;
and
WHEREAS, He kept his office in the heart of South Dallas,
where he was most needed, and he was noted for helping anyone who
needed medical care; he was dauntless in his efforts to help
people with drug addiction; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Emory was named a Dallas Living Legend by the
Junior Black Academy of Arts and Letters; he served as local
executive director for the Southern Christian Leadership
Conference and was the first black president of the Dallas
Council of the United Service Organizations; and
WHEREAS, A man of integrity, strength, and generosity,
Dr. Emory gave unselfishly of his time to others, and his wisdom,
warmth, and valued counsel will not be forgotten by those who
knew him; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Emory lived his life to the fullest and was a
devoted father and grandfather, and he leaves behind memories
that will be treasured forever by his family and many friends;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to
the bereaved family of Dr. Emerson Emory: his son,
Emerson "Rusty" Emory, Jr.; his daughters, Karon Hutcheson
and Sharon Emory; and his two grandchildren; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared
for his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the
Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do
so in memory of Dr. Emerson Emory.
