SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 90
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize Doris Haddock for her exemplary and patriotic work
on behalf of democracy; and
WHEREAS, Doris Haddock, affectionately known as Granny D,
was born January 24, 1910, and has dedicated her life to the
principle of service to others and to the support of democracy;
and
WHEREAS, In the late 1990s, Granny D turned her attention
to the issue of campaign finance reform in our country and was
inspired to walk across America to bring her message to the
American people; on January 1, 1999, she began a 3,200-mile trip
from Pasadena, California, across the country to Washington, D.C.,
where she arrived 14 months later on February 9, 2000; and
WHEREAS, During her trek, Doris visited several Texas
cities over the course of four months, and she was warmly
welcomed by numerous Texans; ranchers, inn owners, and civic
leaders feted her and supported the 90-year-old woman's cause;
after passage of the Campaign Finance Reform Act of 2002,
Granny D again visited Texas to participate in the kickoff of
the Rolling Thunder Tour; and
WHEREAS, Granny D's walk across America helped to put the
spotlight on the need for campaign finance reform in our country,
and her indomitable spirit and concern for America's citizens
have been a source of inspiration to countless Texans; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby commend Doris Haddock for her
dedication to her country and her exceptional accomplishments
and recognize her as an Honorary Texan with all attendant rights
and privileges thereof; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared
for Doris Haddock as an expression of high regard from the
Texas Senate.
