SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 111
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize Bridge City Volunteer Fire and Rescue on the occasion
of its 50th anniversary; and
WHEREAS, On March 22, 2003, residents of Bridge City will
proudly recall the five decades that citizen volunteers have
selflessly come to the aid of their fellowman; and
WHEREAS, Bridge City Fire and Rescue is now called
Orange County Emergency Service District 2 Volunteer Fire
Department; and
WHEREAS, The volunteer fire department in Bridge City
was first organized in 1951 as part of the local civil defense
unit; the auxiliary police unit, first aid rescue unit, and
identification and blood type units were also organized; and a
1929 Chevrolet fire truck was put into service as the city's
first fire truck; and
WHEREAS, Initially, a group of 31 Bridge City residents
donated their time to Bridge City Volunteer Fire and Rescue;
by April of 1952, an election to appoint officers and to write
a constitution and bylaws was held, and in 1954, volunteer
firefighters built a station; and
WHEREAS, The people of Bridge City have strongly
supported the fire and rescue team throughout its history; a
ladies auxiliary was established in 1966; in 1977, citizens
added a substation on Bessie Heights Road, and four years later,
a 12,150-square-foot 10-bay central station was dedicated on
Bland Street; and
WHEREAS, Bridge City Volunteer Fire and Rescue responds to
emergencies inside the city limits in less than five minutes and
provides service around the clock; and
WHEREAS, A reliable and well-organized emergency service
protects the public safety, and Bridge City Volunteer Fire and
Rescue has demonstrated the capacity to come to the assistance
of local residents during times of crisis; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby commend Bridge City Volunteer Fire and
Rescue for providing reliable fire fighting and other emergency
services; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
Bridge City as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
