SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 138

	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to 
recognize Laura Fisher, of Houston, who has been named one of 
Texas' top two youth volunteers for 2003 by the Prudential Spirit 
of Community Awards program; and
	WHEREAS, Sponsored by the National Association of 
Secondary School Principals and Prudential Financial, 
Incorporated, this program honors young people from across the 
nation, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico who undertake 
outstanding acts of volunteerism; as a state honoree, Laura will 
receive several prizes, including a silver medallion and an 
all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., where she will 
participate in a number of events; she is also eligible to be 
named one of America's top 10 youth volunteers for 2003; and
	WHEREAS, Highly respected by her classmates and teachers 
at Memorial High School, Laura Fisher consistently manifests 
concern for others and takes an avid interest in the betterment 
of her community; this fine young Texan developed an art class 
which she teaches weekly to cancer patients at Texas Children's 
Hospital; she also organized an art club at her school to bring 
more volunteers into her art program; through her project, Laura 
brings to a deserving group of children the opportunity to escape 
momentarily from their medical cares and enjoy the creative
world of art; and
	WHEREAS, A source of much pride to our state, Laura 
represents the best of America's youth, and she has made a
lasting contribution to her community through her generous 
spirit and innovative program; now, therefore, be it
	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby commend Laura Fisher on her selection
as a 2003 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards honoree and 
extend to her best wishes for the future; and, be it further
	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 
her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
