SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 150
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Parker County and to proclaim March 3, 2003, Parker County Day at the State Capitol; and WHEREAS, In the 1840s, the Comanche and Kiowa people inhabited the area that is now Parker County; in the 1850s, under the leadership of Isaac Parker, 224 settlers signed a petition requesting the establishment of a new county, and in 1855 the Texas Legislature formed Parker County from Bosque and Navarro counties; the new county was named for Isaac Parker, and Weatherford became the county seat; and WHEREAS, Parker County is located in the gently rolling plains of the Rolling Timbers vegetation region, with its tall grasses, mesquite, and oak; it has been an important producer of livestock and livestock products as well as hay, oats, wheat, peanuts, sorghum, watermelon, and peaches; and WHEREAS, The construction of three railroad lines in the late 1800s linked the region to national markets, attracted new residents, and led to the establishment of new farms and communities; and WHEREAS, With the cultivation of cotton in the early 20th century, the economy of Parker County grew, and by the late 1960s there was a significant production of oil in the area; in 1973 almost 823,000 barrels of crude oil were produced in the county; and WHEREAS, Weatherford College was established in 1869 in the City of Weatherford; it is the oldest continuing junior college west of the Mississippi; and WHEREAS, Weatherford is also the home of the Texas Railroad Museum and the H. B. Prather Museum; each year the city celebrates the Spring Festival of Homes and Parade in April and the Peach Festival and Frontier Days in July; and WHEREAS, The citizens of Parker County are justly proud of their county's illustrious history and its many civic attractions; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 78th Legislature, hereby express appreciation to the citizens of Parker County for their many contributions to our state and extend to them best wishes for a joyous Parker County Day at the State Capitol; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the citizens of Parker County as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
