SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 162
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Americas High School, of the Socorro Independent School District, for achieving an outstanding record as a public school; and WHEREAS, Established in 1996, Americas High School has consistently maintained a first-rate reputation; it has been designated a Recognized campus by the Texas Education Agency for the past four years, and it has been named one of the Top Ten High Schools in the State of Texas by Texas Monthly magazine; and WHEREAS, For the past three years, Americas High School students have won the Sun Country Science Fair Sweepstakes, and they have been state finalists in the Odyssey of the Mind-Destination Imagination competition for the past four years; and WHEREAS, The school's band, choir, winter guard members, and speech and drama students have won numerous awards in recent years, bringing great credit to themselves and to the community; the high school band earned the title of Area Champions in 2001 and 2002; the winter guard took first place for five consecutive years in the New Mexico Winter Guard competition; and student actors have earned the University Interscholastic League's One Act Play Award; and WHEREAS, Recognizing the value of community service, Americas High School has encouraged its students to participate in a wide variety of projects; students contributed to the September 11th Fund sponsored by the American Red Cross; they have also been active in a number of other community projects, including blood drives, donations to the Salvation Army, Walmart's National Make-a-Difference Day, and Toys for Tots; and WHEREAS, Due to the vision and leadership of the administration and faculty, Americas High School is an exemplary school and a source of pride to the Socorro Independent School District and to the community; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 78th Legislature, hereby commend Americas High School for the excellent educational opportunities it offers its students; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the school as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
