SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 200
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize San Antonio's Judson High School Rockets varsity football team for earning the 2002 Class 5A Division I state football championship title with a thrilling 33-32 victory over Midland High School at the Alamodome on December 14, 2002; and WHEREAS, After a tough loss in the season opener to the Waco High School Lions, the Rockets dominated their remaining regular season opponents and swept through the playoffs to capture the state crown and complete their season with a 14-1 record; and WHEREAS, Head coach Jim Rackley schooled his young charges in gridiron fundamentals while also emphasizing the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship; he was aided in his efforts by assistant head coach Pete Gibbens, first assistant coach Sterling Jeter, assistant coaches Melvin Boelter, David Brothers, Charles Bruce, Jimmy Dykes, Billy Hall, Stan Hodges, Danny Lengyel, Kelly Monk, Clint Rutledge, and Bruce Webb, and trainers David Stickelbault and Chris Granger; and WHEREAS, Behind the power running of junior tailback Chancy Campbell, the Rockets built an early first-half lead only to see Midland charge back in the second half; with 17 seconds remaining in the game and Midland leading 32-27, quarterback Dustin Quinney connected with wide receiver Andre Williams, who sprinted into the end zone to recapture the lead and effectively seal the improbable victory; and WHEREAS, The team's last-second win in the state championship game will surely go down in the annals of Texas high school football lore, and the team members are to be commended for their exemplary effort and for their unwavering determination in the face of looming defeat; and WHEREAS, The members of this championship football team, Coach Jim Rackley, Judson High School Principal Brett Springston, and Judson Independent School District Superintendent Michael Zolkoski were introduced to the Senate by Senator Zaffirini and Senators Madla, Van de Putte, and Wentworth on January 29, 2003; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 78th Legislature, hereby extend congratulations to head coach Jim Rackley and the members of the Judson High School Rockets varsity football team for winning the 2002 Class 5A Division I state football championship; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the team as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
