SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 209
In Memory
of
Walt Whitman Rostow
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of Walt Whitman Rostow,
who died February 13, 2003, at the age of 86; and
WHEREAS, Born October 7, 1916, in New York City,
Walt Rostow graduated with bachelor's and doctoral degrees
from Yale University and attended the University of Oxford
as a Rhodes Scholar; he taught at Columbia University,
the University of Oxford, the University of Cambridge,
the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and
The University of Texas; and
WHEREAS, His long and illustrious career as an academic
was interrupted by World War II, during which he served as an
intelligence officer with the Office of Strategic Services in
Europe, and by an eight-year career of further public service
with the federal government, during which he served as an adviser
on national security affairs for President John F. Kennedy and
President Lyndon B. Johnson; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Rostow moved to Austin in 1969 and taught
economics and history at The University of Texas for more than
three decades, working closely with his wife and constant
companion, Elspeth Davies Rostow; the couple launched the Austin
Project in 1992 with the goal of blending the resources of
government, business, academia, and the community to help
children and schools; and
WHEREAS, Walt Rostow was a prolific writer who published
more than 30 books and was known for his positive and gentle
nature, his brilliant mind, and his devotion to his wife,
Elspeth; and
WHEREAS, A man of strength, intelligence, and generosity,
Dr. Rostow gave unselfishly of his time to others, and his
wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel will not be forgotten by those
who knew him; and
WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather,
and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by
his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
bereaved family of Walt Whitman Rostow: his wife, Elspeth Davies
Rostow; his son, Peter Rostow; his daughter, Ann Rostow; his
brother, Ralph Rostow; and his granddaughter, Diana Rostow; and,
be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
memory of Walt Whitman Rostow.
