SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 219
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Laura and Jack Richmond, who have been selected for the 2003 National Jewish Medical and Research Center's Humanitarian Award; and WHEREAS, Laura and Jack Richmond have been prominent members of the San Antonio business community for several decades; in 1968, they opened the first of their 31 Pizza Hut franchises in Bexar County; over the years, their business has become a model for community service and corporate success; and WHEREAS, Committed to treating their employees fairly and to helping them be financially secure, the Richmonds implemented a number of economic support opportunities, including pension plans, debt counseling, and interest-free advances to enable them to pay off unsecured debt; and WHEREAS, By conducting a United Way Fair Share program, the Richmonds encourage Pizza Hut of San Antonio employees to donate time or money to the United Way, which is then exchanged for an equal monetary match from the company; since its inception, the program has raised nearly $1,000,000 to benefit many worthy causes; and WHEREAS, In 1998, for their 30th anniversary with Pizza Hut, Laura and Jack initiated an annual matching grant for selected charities, including Christian Assistance Ministries, Saint Vincent de Paul, the Children's Bereavement Center, and other charitable groups that help people in desperate situations; and WHEREAS, Laura and Jack are highly respected community leaders who serve on the boards of numerous organizations, including the Witte Museum, the University of the Incarnate Word, Boy Scouts of America, and the Mental Health Associations of San Antonio and Texas; and WHEREAS, Laura and Jack Richmond are indeed a source of strength and inspiration to many in their community, and they deserve recognition for their many philanthropic endeavors and their exceptional accomplishments; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 78th Legislature, hereby commend Laura and Jack Richmond on their dedication to helping their fellowman and congratulate them on earning this well deserved award; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for them as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
