SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 223
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize the staff and adviser of El Paso's Irvin High School
student newspaper for receiving national honors; and
WHEREAS, The newspaper, the Observer, earned an
All-American Rating from the National Scholastic Press
Association last fall; the newspaper earned 3,549 points out
of 4,000 and four marks of distinction for coverage and content,
photography and graphics, layout and design, and leadership; and
WHEREAS, The Irvin High School student newspaper also
placed second and received more than 30 individual awards from
the Southwest Press Association regional competition, which
included schools from New Mexico and West Texas; and
WHEREAS, The students publish five issues each semester,
and the newspaper has shown continued improvement in recent
years; in 2000-2001, it earned 3,450 points out of 4,000 and
four marks of distinction from the National Scholastic Press
Association, and in each of the two previous years, it earned one
mark of distinction; and
WHEREAS, The exemplary students on the Observer staff
deserve recognition for their hard work and their dedication to
their school, the school's newspaper, and the field of journalism;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby commend the staff and adviser of Irvin
High School's Observer for their many accomplishments and extend
best wishes to them for continued success in their endeavors;
and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
them as an expression of the esteem of the Texas Senate.
