SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 230
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to join the many proud residents of the City of Mexia and Limestone County on February 27, 2003, as they celebrate Mexia and Limestone County Day at the State Capitol; and WHEREAS, The City of Mexia is named for the Jose Mexia family, who received an eleven-league land grant in 1833 that included what is now the town site; Limestone County was created from Robertson County and organized in 1846; named for its indigenous rock, the county borders the Blacklands and is drained by the Navasota River and its tributaries; and WHEREAS, In 1912, the Mexia Gas and Oil Company discovered a large natural gas deposit; in 1920, the Mexia oil field was discovered, leading to a rich production of oil that totaled 108 million barrels by the mid-1980s; and WHEREAS, In 1942, a camp for prisoners of war was established in the city; in 1947, it was converted for use as the Mexia State School, which has become the city's largest employer; Mexia is also an industrial center and the home to a Fortune 500 company; both the city and county continue to attract new companies and residents who seek to put down roots in this attractive area; and WHEREAS, Known as a charming community, Mexia is proud to be the home of the Old Fort Parker Historic Site, which pays tribute to the family of Cynthia Ann Parker and other pioneers; Cynthia Ann Parker, who was taken from Fort Parker on May 19, 1836, was the mother of Quanah Parker, the last great Comanche chief; and WHEREAS, Lake Mexia in Limestone County provides residents and visitors with such recreational opportunities as boating, fishing, and skiing; and WHEREAS, The people of Mexia and Limestone County are an energetic and vibrant citizenry who have made many outstanding contributions to our state; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 78th Legislature, hereby warmly welcome the Mexia and Limestone County delegation and extend best wishes to them for a memorable visit on Mexia and Limestone County Day at the State Capitol; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the citizens of Mexia and Limestone County as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
