SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 244
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize Zapata County Day at the State Capitol and to welcome
the many Zapata County residents who have joined us on this grand
occasion; and
WHEREAS, The area which Zapata County occupies was
originally home to the Coahuiltecan Indians; the county was
created from Starr and Webb counties in 1858 and named for
Colonel Antonio Zapata, a pioneer rancher and distinguished
military officer who founded the Republic of the Rio Grande; and
WHEREAS, The City of Zapata, the county seat, lies on
the shores of the International Falcon Reservoir; its mild
climate makes the area a popular winter tourist destination;
the San Ygnacio Historic District, Corralitos Ranch and the
San Francisco Ranch provide a number of recreational
opportunities to the county's visitors; and
WHEREAS, Beef cattle raising and the production of onions,
cantaloupes and melons contribute to a strong agricultural
economy with a market value of several million dollars; and
WHEREAS, Zapata County is well known for its variety of
large game, including deer and javelina; in addition, Falcon Lake
provides excellent bass and bow fishing, and angling tournaments
are a prominent feature; the Rio Grande Birding Trail affords
bird-watchers the opportunity to view many unusual bird species,
including the white-collared seedeater; and
WHEREAS, The citizens of Zapata County are a resilient
people who have preserved their heritage, and they are rightfully
proud of their many contributions to the state; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the citizens of
Zapata County and declare February 27, 2003, Zapata County Day
at the State Capitol; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the delegation visiting the State Capitol today and extend best
wishes to them on this special day.
