SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 253
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize Dr. Kaye Stripling for her outstanding leadership as
superintendent of the Houston Independent School District; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Stripling received a bachelor's degree from
Texas Woman's University in 1962; she earned a master's degree in
1967 and a doctoral degree in 1985 from the University of Houston;
and
WHEREAS, Kaye joined the Houston Independent School
District in 1964 and taught at Lee, Looscan, and Atherton
elementary schools; she also served as principal of Burbank,
Parker, and West University elementary schools and of Pershing
Middle School; and
WHEREAS, In 1987, Dr. Stripling was named superintendent
of District XIV; she then served as the Houston Independent
School District's assistant superintendent of staff development
and oversaw the Rice School/La Escuela Rice; in 1995, she was
appointed district superintendent of the Southwest
Administrative District; and
WHEREAS, Widely recognized for her administrative skills,
Dr. Stripling was named superintendent of schools for the Houston
Independent School District in January of 2001, succeeding
Dr. Rod Paige, who assumed the position of United States
secretary of education; and
WHEREAS, Long recognized as an active advocate for
teachers, Dr. Stripling publicly declared her commitment to
making 2001 the Year of the Teacher in the Houston schools during
her first State of the Schools Address; and
WHEREAS, Since her appointment as superintendent,
Dr. Stripling has consistently demonstrated highly effective
leadership and the ability to maintain the district-wide
progress initiated by her predecessor, and the citizens of
Houston take great pride in her expertise in the field of
education and her many accomplishments; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby commend Dr. Kaye Stripling for her
invaluable contributions to the Houston Independent School
District and extend best wishes to her for a rewarding future
as its superintendent; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
