SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 264
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Jonathan Butler on the occasion of his performance at the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, Seventh Annual Alpha Legacy Celebration on March 1, 2003; and WHEREAS, Jonathan Butler is a renowned vocalist, guitarist, and recording artist who began his musical career singing in the townships and shanty towns of his native South Africa when he was seven years old; and WHEREAS, Thirty years ago, his debut album with Jive Records introduced him to international audiences on a grand scale and led to the Grammy-nominated pop hit "Lies"; and WHEREAS, The Alpha Legacy Celebration is the major fund-raiser for the Legacy Foundation and Xi Tau Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, and benefits youth outreach initiatives; and WHEREAS, The successful career of Jonathan Butler is an example to young people throughout our country who aspire to success in their professions, and his presence at this fund-raiser will undoubtedly be of great benefit to the fraternity's outreach endeavors; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 78th Legislature, hereby commend Jonathan Butler for his exceptional career and his many contributions to the world of music and extend best wishes to him for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for Jonathan Butler as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
