SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 288

	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to 
recognize Dr. Sylvia R. Ramos for her outstanding service to 
the educational system in Houston and the State of Texas; and
	WHEREAS, Dr. Ramos is in her 30th year with the Houston 
Community College System, and she has been the president of 
Houston Community College-Southeast, one of the system's five 
regional colleges, since that position was established in 1991; 
and
	WHEREAS, She earned an associate's degree from Victoria 
College, a bachelor of science degree from Southeast Texas State 
University, a master of education degree from Sam Houston State 
University, and a doctorate in higher education from the 
University of Houston; and
	WHEREAS, She has held numerous leadership positions in 
local, state, and national organizations, including the American 
Association of Community Colleges, the National Community 
College Hispanic Council, and the Texas Association of Chicanos 
in Higher Education, and she is a member of health professions 
education advisory and task force committees for the Texas Higher 
Education Coordinating Board; and
	WHEREAS, Dr. Ramos was recognized as Educator of the Year 
by the League of United Latin American Citizens and as the 
Hispanic of the Year by Houston's Fiestas Patrias organization; 
she is active in a number of community organizations and serves 
on the board of directors of the Houston Hispanic Chamber of 
Commerce; and
	WHEREAS, Devoted to the college and to her profession, 
Dr. Ramos has exceptional leadership skills, and she has had 
a positive influence on the lives of countless students and 
citizens in the Houston community and across the state; now, 
therefore, be it
	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 
78th Legislature, hereby commend Dr. Sylvia R. Ramos for her 
worthy contributions to higher education in Texas and extend 
to her best wishes for continued success; and, be it further
	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 
her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
