SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 293
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pleasure in recognizing the Avenue Community Development Corporation of Houston on the occasion of its 10th anniversary; and WHEREAS, Ten years ago, a group of neighbors created an organization to develop affordable housing and preserve historic buildings in the Old Sixth Ward, a National Register Historic District near downtown Houston; and WHEREAS, In time, the organization's target area was expanded from the Old Sixth Ward to the entire Washington Avenue community, and the group's name was changed to Avenue Community Development Corporation to reflect the expanded boundaries; and WHEREAS, The ethnically diverse, mixed-use neighborhood is slowly being revitalized and preserved through a number of programs initiated by the organization, and it has developed over 25 single-family homes for purchase by low-income families; and WHEREAS, The organization provides home buyer education and counseling, computer training, and affordable rental housing; it hosts the Art on the Avenue program to assist artists in the community and is currently working on plans to refurbish the historic Jefferson Davis Hospital for use as affordable housing for low-income artists; and WHEREAS, In preserving the economic and cultural diversity and the historical ambience of the Old Sixth Ward and the Washington Avenue and Near Northside neighborhoods, the Avenue Community Development Corporation is contributing greatly to the progress and resurgence of the North and Northwest area of downtown Houston; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 78th Legislature, hereby commend the Avenue Community Development Corporation for its outstanding work and contributions to the people of Houston and extend best wishes to all associated with the organization for continued success in the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
