SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 301
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize Stinson Municipal Airport of San Antonio for being
selected to receive the 2003 Reliever Airport of the Year Award;
and
WHEREAS, The airport has an extensive history in
San Antonio; founded in the early 1900s, it is the nation's
second-oldest continuously operating general aviation airport;
and
WHEREAS, It is named for a family of early aviation
pioneers, the Stinsons, who began the business and focused
international attention on San Antonio, contributing
significantly to its development as a center of aviation; and
WHEREAS, When the Stinson family left San Antonio,
Stinson Field became the municipal airport, providing passenger
and mail service until World War II, during which the
Army Air Corps operated the facility as an air training depot;
after the war the city once again took over operations of the
airport; and
WHEREAS, On the brink of major expansions, including the
complete restoration of two hangars and the construction of a new
office, classroom, and administration building, the airport
continues to accommodate the ongoing growth of its operations and
has well-developed plans that provide long-term options for
future growth; and
WHEREAS, With two flight schools, an air cargo operator,
an aviation museum, and three fixed base operators, Stinson
Municipal Airport remains a great airport for both seasoned
aviators and student pilots; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby commend Stinson Municipal Airport for
receiving the 2003 Reliever Airport of the Year Award; and, be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as an
expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
