SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 307
In Memory
of
William Burt Cunningham, Jr.
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens of San Antonio in mourning the loss of William Burt Cunningham, Jr., who died August 15, 2002; and WHEREAS, A native of San Antonio, Bill earned a bachelor's degree from The University of Texas at Austin in 1941 and began his career in journalism in Cuero; he left after six months to serve his country in the United States Army Medic Corps during World War II; he was awarded the Bronze Star for heroic achievement in action; and WHEREAS, Bill returned to Cuero in 1946 and met his wife-to-be, Ellen Marie Low; the couple married on August 3, 1946, and they were blessed with two children; and WHEREAS, Bill became managing editor of the Paris News and later enjoyed a 35-year career with the San Antonio Express-News, where he is remembered as the Farm and Ranch Editor and as the writer of the popular "Cattle Clatter" column; and WHEREAS, Active in many professional and civic organizations, Bill served as president of the San Antonio Press Club and of the San Antonio chapter of Sigma Delta Chi Honorary Journalism Fraternity; he was a director of Boysville, director emeritus of the San Antonio Livestock Exposition, and charter director of the South Texas Ranch Club; and WHEREAS, A devout Christian, Bill was a member of Christ Episcopal Church for 66 years; and WHEREAS, Bill was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 78th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family of William Burt Cunningham, Jr.: his wife, Ellen Marie Cunningham; his son, William Low Cunningham and his wife, Nevin; his daughter, Kaye Ellen Worrell and her husband, Robert; and his grandchildren, Drew, Stephanie, Jessica, and Catherine and her husband, Patrick; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of William Burt Cunningham, Jr. Wentworth ________________________________ President of the Senate I hereby certify that the above Resolution was adopted by the Senate on March 5, 2003, by a rising vote. ________________________________ Secretary of the Senate ________________________________ Member, Texas Senate
