SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 308
In Memory
of
Albert Steves IV
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
of San Antonio in mourning the loss of Albert "Aboo" Steves IV,
who died February 10, 2003, at the age of 67; and
WHEREAS, Albert Steves was born November 3, 1935, in
Fort Worth to Albert Steves III and Katherine Muir Steves; he
graduated from Texas Military Institute in 1954, and following
a family tradition, he earned a degree from Washington and Lee
University in 1958; he also earned a certificate from Harvard
Business School in 1983; and
WHEREAS, He served as an officer in the United States Army
at its Air Defense School in Fort Bliss for two years; in 1960,
he returned to San Antonio to join the family business, Ed Steves
and Sons, succeeding his father as president and chief executive
officer of the lumber company founded by his great-great-grandfather
in 1866; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Steves was respected for his many
accomplishments and for his outstanding leadership in his
community; he was a past president of the Young Men's Christian
Association of San Antonio and served on the board of directors
of the Young Men's Christian Association of the Rockies and the
National Young Men's Christian Association; and
WHEREAS, He was a past president of the Order of the Alamo
and was a member of the Texas Cavaliers, the Merry Knights of
King William, the San Antonio German Club, the Conopus Club,
and the San Antonio Country Club; and
WHEREAS, In 1988, he joined the Southwest Foundation for
Biomedical Research as director of Corporate and Planned Giving,
and in January of 2002, he was named the director of Special
Projects under the office of the president; and
WHEREAS, He was a devout Christian and served as a senior
warden at Saint Mark's Episcopal Church; he was also chairman
of the Department of Finance for the Episcopal Diocese of
West Texas; and
WHEREAS, A man of integrity, strength, and generosity,
Mr. Steves gave unselfishly of his time to others, and his
wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel will not be forgotten by
those who knew him; and
WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather,
and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by
his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
bereaved family of Albert Steves IV: his wife of 39 years,
Martha Monier Steves; his sons and their wives, Albert Steves V
and Tricia Alebis and Kurt Monier Steves and Amy Barber; his
daughter and her husband, Frances Katharine Steves and
Kent Calgaard; his three grandchildren, Albert Steves VI,
Georgia Estelle Steves, and Kathleen Frances Calgaard; and
his sister, Katharine Ann Steves; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared
for his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the
Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it
do so in memory of Albert Steves IV.
